Of No Reputation

But made himself of no reputation and took upon the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. Phillipeans 12:7 KJV

What a blessed and holy text. We see here what Jesus Christ did for sinful men. The verse says first, that Christ made himself of no reputation.

The word reputation has two basic meanings and both are implied here. The first meaning of the word reputation I want to look at is to make empty or void.

Jesus Christ is 100 percent God. he did however willingly empty Himself of some attributes of deity and became man. He was rich, but became poor so we could become rich. He willingly left the courts of heaven and was born in poverty in a manger. The word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Oh, my soul.

The word reputation also means a good name, or what others expect out of you. Christ did not try to bring glory to Himself, but He always glorified the Father!

Oh how we as the servants of the most High God should never put our reputation above bringing glory to God.

I know of a preacher, whom God used to help me greatly in years gone by. This man preached to me from God’s word. He is now useless because he became more concerned about his reputation and trying to become a dictator instead of a preacher.

He became jealous and feared the loss of his position and sought his own reputation instead of what God wanted. The last part of this verse says that Christ took upon Himself the form of a servant. The word servant here means bondslave. This was the lowest form of a servant.

Christ went from the highest to the lowest to redeem sinners. He also humbled himself. This means to make low. He was so consumed with God the Father’s will that he was obedient unto death.

As servants of God we must empty ourselves and not seek our own glory, but God’s glory.

We are told in the first part of this chapter to let the same mind or way of thinking be in us. Amen!
